CLIFTON ACES FOOTBALL CLUB

HISTORY TO DATE

In March 2007 Darren Clarke approached Les and Matt Sullivan seeking their help in setting up a football club. This followed a request from some parents who were taking their children to coaching sessions on Saturday mornings.

A lot of thought went into this idea and as a result a new club was formed. The idea at the time was to enter a team of under 11s in to the Young Elizabethan League at the beginning of the season 2007-08.

A chance remark was made by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service which, resulted in a meeting with Green Watch at Dunkirk fire station. That meeting was the start of what can only be described as a partnership that got us “fired up.”

A club badge had been designed by Paul Knight earlier in the year in respect of another club but had not been taken up, so he agreed to let this club use this badge. At this time we didn’t have a name so Les thought of Clifton Aces Football Club. Both Darren and Matt thought that was “great” so the name stuck.

Dunkirk Primary School kindly allowed us to use their field for training, and the fire service purchased a football kit for us.

Word soon got around, and before long we were often seeing 24 youngsters turning up for training. It was clear we had to have a rethink on our plans and an under 13s team was formed. Once again, the fire service provided another kit.

Darren had been involved with a senior team in 2006-07 and some of the players had expressed an interest in continuing to work with him. So, that made team number three.

It was at this point it was clear we had something here that was getting bigger and bigger as the weeks went by and, in August we had to introduce an Academy which includes everyone under 10.

We feel at this point we need to take stock of how far we have come in such a short time and, it is important not to lose sight of Clifton Aces as a club and tot separate teams within a club.

In August our under 13s won the fair play trophy at the Priory Celtic tournament. Let hope as a club we can continue adding to their success.

As of July this year we currently have three teams competing in league football, and our academy team play regular competitive football.

As 2008/09 approaches the future looks very bright for our club. With more teams in the pipeline and exciting plans for facilities of our own.
